I read this for a challenge. Actually, I probably wouldn't have read it at all if it wasn't for the LYX Reading Challenge, but I did and I'm not really impressed by the book, although I've read several very positive reviews.Back then, in the fifth novel or so, I was very interested in Hunter. Not at first, but when it became clear that he wasn't what he was supposed to be - a monster - I was feeling very curious and wanted to learn more about him. Now, I didn't really hope for romance, because in my book parental love is much more tender, but we can't all get what we want. So, as you can probably guess, there wasn't much of him and whatshername.. Mira? in the book. And that was the first disappointment. What really annoyed me was the way he was portrayed. Of course, we already know that Adrians writing style is the way it is. Not very subtle.. Too bolt for my tastes. And when it came to him she always pointed out how cold and ruthless he was or is and how he knows 300 ways to kill a person with an eReader. At one point I really didn't want to read about that anymore. I know it's an important part of his personality but there are several ways to show how he is or was and pointing them out the way Adrian did is just too easy, I think.Corinne, the heroine, was sometimes, and I know that will sound so evil, a non-authentic survivor (I don't like to call 'victims' of rape, abuse etc. 'victims'. They survived it). I know I can only speak for myself, but she was so.. I think Karen Marie Moning let Barrons say that if you're raped you don't go away, you crawl. But she didn't crawl. I know, it's important to keep your head up high, but her reactions were too.. mhe. There was like only one time when she got angry, I don't recall a scene where she really got disgusted with herself and it felt like she only did her traumatic past a lip service, if that makes sense.I can't recommend that book to someone who really has been raped, molested, abused, beaten etc. It made me sick to my stomach and I'm not even considering myself a 'real' victim of anything except my own stupidity. Of course, there probably are people who'll like the way Corinne handledher situation, but I didn't. It was too flat and shallow, you know?I don't really want to talk about more than that, because the rest of the story was a typical Lara Adrian book and if you liked the others, you know what to expect. If you just read this review and haven't read any of the other books, check out the first one here on Goodreads. All in all, not what I expected. I'm always very, very critical when it comes to topics like these and I know, Paranormal Romance is no Self-Help guide, but in comparison: Sherrilyn Kenyons books, who deal with dark pasts, are more real and deep than this novel was. I might read the next book, because Deeper than Midnight ended with a Cliffhanger, but I am not sure yet.
