To review this is weird for a couple of reasons, several of them I'll try to point out. Some are just personal crap. While I truly liked how Gibson was able to make the reader feel what the heroine, Autumn, felt, this is precisely the point that makes it hard to actually like the story. Five or six years ago, after her mother died: Autumn spends a week in Las Vegas where she meets Sam, has sex, falls in love and marries him. And he's a jerk, gone before she's up without any note or reason. Now she's a wedding planner, has his son, Connor and tries to not hate him, which is hard considering that she's been alone through her pregnancy and he's not exactly the father of the year. (Thanks, by the way. My own daddy issues are very present right now.. oô) So, when he notices what a bad dad he actually is, he wants to change and tries. He doesn't do bad, but along the way he starts feeling something. He wants to be with Autumn, but he doesn't know why, how long etc. - Once bitte, twice shy-Autumn doesn't trust him and why would she? Why should she? She does feel attracted to him, but she also was hurt badly. And her son as well. Sam was constantly putting other things over his son, he spent his summer with some bikini-barbies, only met his son when the schedule fit and when he felt like it, while he could have taken the time if he really wanted to. His son, 5 years old, just longs for something like stability. A father, a mother, a family. He adores his dad, but he also noticed that his father isn't there. He's off playing hockey and screwing topmodels, but he's not there for him. And still, he loves him. This made him unlikeable. I mean, really. When I read things from his perspective I often tried to like him, tried to see his point and after all he accepted the fact that he's been not the best person in the world, but the development was a little too flat and I was a little too involved with Autumn and Connor to forgive and forget. Also, Autumn has had time to deal with the shit he put her through while the reader hasn't. Although I thought some of the romantic scenes were cute I'd much rather seen another ending. I know it's probably a bitchy thing to say but Sam should have suffered more for what he's done. And if that's making me a vengeful person, so be it. ;pOn the other side, I can see that people aren't perfect. Life is about making mistakes and learning from them. I suppose being a human myself (who would have thought, I know) I should be less unforgiving and as I've said, I tried. When I read Sam's parts, I mean.. the parts written in his POV I was able to relate a little. I thought: "Yeah, he regrets what he put them through" but this regret wasn't enough for me. I wanted Connor to step up and tell his dad what a jerk he was. It's stupid, because Connor is five and he doesn't really see the flaws of his father, but I still thought that someone - other than Autumn and her brother - should have made Sam's life a little less easy. (Admittedly, his life wasn't easy when he was younger, but in the present it actually was. He had his playmates, he had his friends, he had his career..)As you can see, it's been a struggle.. I could relate to all of the characters, one way or another and that made it a good read. It was a believable story and the plot wasn't bad either, very character-driven. But I'm not quite satisfied with the end. I'd have rather seen the heroine find another man and Sam being just a good father. I'm very interested in the other couples that have been mentioned in the book and I need, need, need to know what's up with Autumns brother, Vince. I hope Gibson'll write (or has already written) his story.
